IPBES Technical Support Unit: Regional Assessment for Europe and Central Asia
Established in 2012, the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) provides a global science-policy mechanism recognized by both the scientific and policy communities. Among its functions are to synthesize, review, assess and critically evaluate relevant information and knowledge generated worldwide by governments, academia, scientific organizations, non-governmental organizations and indigenous communities.
IPBES is conducting a suite of regional, global, thematic and methodological assessments of biodiversity and ecosystem services to bridge the science-policy gap. One of these is the regional assessment for Europe and Central Asia (ECA), encompassing 54 countries. The Institute of Plant Sciences at the University of Bern responded to an IPBES call to host a technical support unit to support the work of about 100 experts compiling the ECA assessment, for which Prof. Dr. Markus Fischer, Director of the Institute, acts as one of three co-chairs. The technical support unit consists of two science officers, Amor Torre-Marin and Andre Mader.
